FAQ for Consumers

We are implementing a new subscription model. Subscribers will have access to all of our content. That means you will be able to access our content where and how you want it — through all platforms, including web, mobile, smart phone, tablet and delivery of the print edition on the days you select.

If you choose not to subscribe, digital access will be limited to a small number of articles a month.

Why are you making this change?

Today, readers access our unique, high quality local content in a number of ways. This Full Access subscription model creates a structure to allow readers to choose how to read our news and information.

In conjunction with this effort, we are also investing in the unique local content we deliver across all platforms including tablet, mobile, and new technologies as they come to market.

What are the benefits of this new Full Access model?

Subscribers can access content anywhere and anytime using digital platforms. The content accessed through the Web, mobile, and tablet will be frequently updated and will provide coverage of breaking news and events through articles and photos as well as provide content that cannot be included in print, such as databases, streaming video, blogs and chats. The subscription pricing is aligned with content value. Unlike in the past, subscriptions remain active during vacation periods. You will be able to continue accessing the content while traveling, including viewing a digital replica of the print edition. If the subscription also includes delivery of the print edition, you will be credited a portion of the subscription which relates to the delivery expense for the print edition.

What does the rate in the letter mean, and has my subscription cost increased?

The rate in the letter reflects the cost of your subscription, which going forward, will include all our offerings including the same frequency of delivery of the print edition that you get now. Yes, the price is higher than you paid previously for your subscription.

I do not have a cell phone or computer, or I just don’t want the digital part of this. Do I still have to pay more?

Yes. The new subscription pricing is for full access to our content. We provide news and information of excellent value for our subscribers; people rely on us more than any other local media source. We employ the largest team of reporters covering our community, and they work hard every day to keep you informed. We provide the greatest breadth of topics and content with the depth to help people understand important issues, and we provide a vital forum for community conversation. That’s what you are paying for – the content.

As a subscriber, you have the choice of how you want to access the content. We understand that some people will only want to use the print edition and others will only access our content online. But we believe a majority of our users will use a variety of all options to keep up on all the latest news and information when they want and how they want.

If you wish to only receive your news in print, you don’t need to do anything any different once the new program begins. For those who want to use digital access on their computers, mobile phones, or tablets, you will need to complete a few simple steps to activate your account online.

What if I subscribed after the subscription price change notification went out?

The price will be honored for the promotional period you signed up for. After the promotional period ends, the cost of the subscription will be the then regular published monthly price.

Why has my vacation and missed paper credit related to my delivery of the print edition changed?

While on vacation, or in the event of a missed delivery, subscribers will be able to continue accessing the content while traveling, including viewing a digital replica of the print edition. Subscribers will be credited a portion of the subscription which relates to the delivery expense for the print edition.

Why has my billing cycle been changed to a monthly cycle?

Printed bill cycles are being changed to monthly cycles as part of the new subscription model. We have found that subscribers prefer to be billed monthly similar to other services such as telephone and cable subscriptions. We also encourage printed bill subscribers to change to EZ Pay billing. EZ Pay prices have been discounted and are like getting one month free when compared to printed bill prices over the course of a year. Subscribers may change to EZ Pay billing by calling customer service.

What subscription options for news and information are offered?

All Full Access subscription options include:

  1. Full desktop Web access
  2. Mobile access- both mobile Web and apps for iPhone and Android devices.
  3. Tablet access via Web with icon for “app-like” experience
  4. e-newspaper, the digital replica of the print newspaper, accessed online (a daily email is sent to subscribers for access to the e-newspaper)

Prices vary based on your choice of the frequency of delivery of the print edition.

If I’m a subscriber, how do I activate my account and access content online and through digital devices?

From a Desktop PC or Mac:

  1. Go to our website.
  2. Look for the “Activate” link in the top right corner of the screen and follow the steps outlined to get access.

From your tablet or mobile phone:

  1. Point your tablet’s browser to tablet.sitename.com or your mobile browser to m.sitename.com.
  2. Click on the “Current subscriber? Get access” link and follow the steps.
Or, you can activate your account from your desktop (see above), then go to either tablet.sitename.com or m.sitename.com and use the “Log In” link.

From our smart phone app:

  1. Download the app from Apple’s app store or Android users from the Google Play store.
  2. Open the app and click on the “Current subscriber? Get access” link and follow the steps outlined.
Or, you can activate your account from your desktop (see above), then go to the app and use the “Log In” link.

To access the e-newspaper, an electronic replica of the print edition:

  1. Subscribers will receive daily e-mails with links to the product
  2. Or click on the e-Newspaper top-right link on the website and then access with the same e-mail and password that was set up in the activation.

How do I share access to my account?

  1. Subscribers can share access with a friend or family member for each subscription they purchase through their “Hi (your name)” link at the top right of any page (once they are logged in).
  2. The subscriber should click on the “Share Digital Access” link. If the subscriber has multiple subscriptions, they can share each with a different individual if they choose to do so.
  3. The subscriber should complete the form and click “Send Invite”. An email is sent and includes a link to accept the invitation and access the site.

Is there any way to access your content if I’m not a subscriber?

Non-subscribers will only have access to limited portions of our content. The digital platforms will be metered, meaning a non-subscriber will be able to access content up to a certain point. Home page, section fronts and classified verticals (i.e. cars.com) will remain accessible to anyone, even without a subscription. We will continue to sell single copy print editions of the newspaper at retail outlets.

As a media company, we provide news and information that has tremendous value for its readers; people rely on this information more than any other local source. We invest in the largest team of reporters covering our communities. We provide the greatest breadth of topics and content, with depth to help people understand important issues, and we provide a vital forum for community conversation.

Why has the cost of single copy gone up?
